- Russian textile-factory worker and amateur parachutist Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first human female (and first human civilian) in space. No other human females would reach space until 1982 CE.
- United States President John F. Kennedy proposes that the US and the Soviet Union work together on reaching Luna. His Soviet counterpart, Premier Nikita Kruschev, nearly accepts this proposal, but the plans are called off after Kennedy is assassinated.
