- The translation of the Prothean data cache found on Mars is completed, and humans discover that Charon, long believed to be a moon of Pluto, is actuall a mass relay encased in ice. A team led by Jon Grissom is sent to activate the relay, and in doing so, they discover that the relays allow starships to jump almost instantaneously over vast distances.
- In response to the discovery of the mass relays, the eighteen largest nations on Earth sign a charter to create the Systems Alliance, humanity's exploratory and military spearhead.
