Aleena T'Suurik is a trained Asari Commando-turned-mercenary operating in the Terminus Systems. She is best known for the destruction of an abandoned Salarian space-station, in which she was presumed dead.
Background[]
Aleena K'Nistra, later T'Suurik, was born into an impoverished family on Illium in Nos Jura, a poorer residential city not too far from the hum-drum of the capital. Her mother had been an Asari dancer on Omega, and her father was a Turian discharged from the military due to an injury that left him unable to serve. The two had met first when he had visited Omega while still on active duty, and reunited when he returned to drink away his sorrows some years later only to meet her again. They eloped soon after with barely anything to their name, but only managed to get as far as Illium before running out of funds.
Years later the two gave birth to Aleena, who was as headstrong and immature as her father with little of her mother's patience. The two parents began working at a salesman's warehouse in Nos Astra with hopes of earning enough credits to get off-world and find a decent home in one of the outer colonies. Aleena, meanwhile, grew up with little supervision on the streets of Illium and often fell into the wrong crowds. When she was old enough, Aleena put her father's defense training and her own self-taught skills to good use as she began entering underground fights to earn some credits, which to her surprise she excelled at. While still small-time work, Aleena began making something of a name for herself among the workers of Nos Jura.
Things didn't stay that way however, as a workplace disaster took both of her parents their lives when Aleena was a teenager, and she was left to navigate life alone on one of the seediest planets in the galaxy.
With nothing to her name, Aleena poured everything into her fights and used the credits to sustain herself in a dingy apartment in the lower levels of Nos Astra. As her name began spreading between the match organizers across Illium's lower levels, she caught the eye of Matriarch Elassadra T'Suurik, a wealthy business mogul and fixture of Illium's high society. Due to her latent biotic potential and clear physical prowess the Matriarch approached Aleena with an offer of a lifetime; to enroll her in a prestigious military academy off-world. With no better prospects, she agreed.
Though she wasn't aware at the time, Matriarch Elassadra had trapped Aleena into a contract common on Illium known colloquially as a Sponsorship - the promise of schooling and training of a child in exchange for their indentured service as an adult. Aleena was sent offspent the next decade in military boot camps honing her abilities, undergoing rigorous training by the best instructors Elessandra's credits could buy, and often pushing hereelf to her physical and mental limit. Throughout her time therr, Elassadra would visit when she could and Aleena began to see her as a surrogate mother-figure. In the end, Elassadra's intuition proved right and Aleena became an Asari Commando.
When her training was finally complete, a now-adult Aleena returned home where she began her work at Matriarch T'Suurik's side - she was expected to work around the clock as her sponsor's personal Bodyguard, and on occasion go on clandestine missions to 'improve her standing, or protect her name' - this usually equated to anything from shaking down competition and collecting on owed debts, all the way up to search and rescue operations, corporate Espionage and foiling assassination attempts on the Matriarch or her associates. Aleena grew to rely on Elassadra's praise even more throughout her time working under her, which the Matriarch quickly capitalised on, and Aleena adopted the last name T'Suurik.
After more than half a century of service, Aleena's original contract was due to finish which would leave her a free woman, and Aleena declined Elassadra's many offers to stay on longer - despite reservations about leaving, Aleena began dreaming of exploring the galaxy on her own and believed rather naively that Elassadra would be happy for her. The following week Aleena was due to depart for an Asari colony where Elassadra had promised a friend would help set up her new life, but quickly learned it was a trap and barely survived a fight with several of her 'sisters', others Sponsored by Elassadra in the same way as herself. Aleena managed to defeat them and barely succeeded in getting off-world, but not before a message from Elassadra made it clear that she was never to return to Illium, or speak of her work to anyone.
Mercenary Life[]
With her mother-figure, her home, and her life as a T'Suurik bodyguard behind her, Aleena flourished for the next several decades into a feared and rather infamous mercenary in the Terminus Systems, preferring the lawless part of the galaxy for its looser restrictions and more interesting clients. On top of that, Aleena finally had the freedom to take jobs she choose, and often reneged on contracts she didn't Morally agree with. At first Aleena jumped between multiple mercenary gangs and sponsors before finally setting out on her own.
Not long into her fourth decade as a merc, Aleena found herself hunting the same target as an exiled Krogan merc, though the two managed to compromise by 'splitting' their target. The same can't be said for their second meeting however, when Urdnot Wrex was hired to kill her by an old friend of her Matriarch Elassadra, a Volus diplomat she had once humiliated in front of several dignitaries back on Illium. The two mercenaries respected each other enough that they decided to solve the problem with a fight - if Wrex won, then Aleena would be dead and he'd be free to collect; if Aleena won, then Wrex would give up the Volus' location before she killed him. Aleena choose an old salarian frigate used by pirates to battle it out on, to avoid civilian casualties.
The fight was long, bloody, and left a majority of the station abandoned or in critical condition well into their third day of fighting. During a brief respite while Aleena was patching up her wounds, the station's core went critical and she barely managed to limp to an escape pod before the entire station was vaporized. She contacted Wrex who had similarly survived, and promised him luck in their next encounter before her pod was thrown off course by debris, colliding with the surface of an uncharted world with more than enough force to kill her - but it didn't, somehow.
On the Run[]
Aleena woke up in a general medical facility on Bakara, an Asari colony, 4 weeks later with severe trauma to the right side of her body but alive nonetheless. She managed to piece together later that it was Elassadra who had saved her, always keen to keep an eye on an investments, and had forwarded her battle with Urdnot Wrex to 'some friends' who managed to patch up her borderline-lethal injuries on the condition that Aleena consider working for them. When questioned, the representatives of these friends only identified themselves as a Syndicate "with the advancement of the Terminus Systems' in mind, and offered her one chance to reconsider their offer of service. Aleena refused, never one to tie herself down, and broke out of the facility midway through her cybernetic treatment. She left on the first freighter further into the Terminus Systems, far away from the strangers her mother had tangled her up in.
Aleena tried to resume mercenary life, but she found herself blacklisted by her old contacts and pursued by thus strange syndicate who saved her life on Illium. In one last ditch effort she decided to pursue the Volus who'd targeted her in the first place, who she blamed just after her mother for the mess she found herself in.
She tracked the diplomat to a colony on the outer reaches of Terminus space, but instead found that an army of battle mechs delivered by this Syndicate were ready and waiting at his estate for her. For a second time, Aleena barely escaped with her life.
She tracked the diplomat to a colony on the outer reaches of Terminus space, but the Volus was nowhere to be found, already off-world and out of her reach. Instead, a small army of battle mechs delivered by this Syndicate was ready and waiting at his estate for her. For a second time, Aleena barely escaped with her life.
Ever since, Aleena has been on the run and unsure if the Syndicate or even her mother is still tracking her, or if it's simple paranoia, but nevertheless she never stays long enough in one place to find out.
On the trail of a sloppy Syndicate agent, Aleena ran into three other mercenaries - a quarian demolitions, krogan mechanic and a naive salarian accountant also looking for traces of the Syndicate. After tensions died down, the four agreed to work together to find this illusive group. And then Cerberus arrived.
Relationships[]
Elassadra T'Suurik[]
Aleena and Elassadra met when the former was extremely vulnerable, something The Matriarch was more than willing to use to her advantage. For most of her training off-world, Aleena saw Elassadra as nothing more than someone noisily checking on her progress, but quickly began relying on Elassadra for support and positive reinforment. By the time her training was finished, Elassadra had began treating Aleena as a surrogate daughter and Aleena reciprocated, though it was emotionally and mentally abusive, as under that stoic exterior Aleena always saught the Matriarch's approval and found herself falling short. Elassadra would also often guilt Aleena into conforming to her ideas or for questioning her orders.
After Elassadra turned on her, however, Aleena struggled for years to grapple with the years of manipulation and preferred not to dwell on her past life. A deep resentment of the Matriarch and those who used people in a similar way led Aleena to act brashly in some situations. It also resulted in Aleena developing severe trust issues, something she only managed to solve when she was hired to find the Innusanon Chip and began slowly trusting her team.
Urdnot Wrex[]
Though they only met briefly, the two mercenaries gained a strong respect for eachother's skill.
