Grundan Red, born Sarah-Jane Thuring, was a human member of the krogan Clan Grundan. Her parents were killed in a crash over Tuchanka, leaving the girl an orphan with little hope of surviving. However, she was taken in by the krogan who investigated the crash and nicknamed Pyjak by Grundan Krul, treated as something of a scavenger-turned-pet. As she grew, Pyjak learned by imitation, wrestling with the clan's children and learning to speak the clan's dialect until in her mid-teens, she demanded to undergo the rite of passage. Though there was some resistance to it in the clan, she was allowed the rite, and her success earned her new name and place in the clan.

While female, Red was not treated like a krogan female for obvious reasons and joined the clan's ranks as a warrior. Later, Clan Grundan would join the union of clans led by Urdnot Wrex, and Red was tasked with leading the defenders of one of the female settlements. Holding the post for nearly two years, Red also helped in teaching the krogan children while coordinating defenses, patrols, and emergency plans. When the Reapers landed on Tuchanka, Red joined Wrex's mainline army as a scout, and fought with distinction through the war.

Grundan Red occupied a unique position in krogan culture, which in turn made her a unique person. Like anything that survived on Tuchanka, she had to be strong, but she was still comparatively weak to any krogan. So in order to survive the brawls with the krogan she grew up with, Red was fierce and relentless, always looking to use any weak point or opportunity to her advantage against an opponent. She had to always approach combat with such cunning and resourcefulness in order to avoid being fatally wounded even if she triumphed. As a female warrior, Red understood better than most the struggles of both male and female krogan in the face of the genophage, and had great respect for Urdnot Wrex as a leader and fellow warrior.

When it came to her own race, Red was often short-tempered and gruff with those she met, considering most other humans weak. She seemed to think of herself as krogan, and certainly shared their mentality. Words meant little to Red, only displays of strength, skill at arms, and clever methods of surviving impressed her. However, she was extremely unfamiliar with relationships, considering reproduction merely another aspect of survival. Meeting more and more humans fighting by fighting alongside their forces against the Reapers would make her rethink her place in the galaxy, but wouldn't change her unflinching resolve to survive.
