Mary Shepard née Lawrence was a colonial botanist on Mindoir and the mother of Commander Shepard. In 2170, batarian slavers led by Skeev invaded the colony and enslaved or murdered most of the inhabitants, Mary included. Only her son, Jack, survived. He would grow up to become the galaxy's first human Spectre. She also had a daughter, Susan, who also perished in the attack.
