Early life[]
Pirate[]
In the years leading up to the Skyllian Blitz, Mathias ran with a pirate gang. His tenure as a pirate took him throughout the Terminus Systems, the Attican Traverse and the Skyllian Verge. Mathias and the rest of the gang participated mostly in harassing merchant starships or bulk freighters, although they also periodically raided colonies or engaged other criminals in battles over turf and booty.
Skyllian Blitz[]
Mathias, alongside thousands of pirates, slavers, and criminals of every stripe, was convinced by Elanos Haliat to participate in a major assault on the colony of Elysium. The Blitz, as this offensive would be named later, was a major turning point for Mathias. He held some reservations about participating, particularly a colony like Elysium. Nevertheless, he eventually came around and participated willingly alongside the rest of his gang, persuaded by promises of booty. He participated in the vicious ground fighting that ensued, noting that the majority of the people he had killed weren't even Alliance soldiers; instead armed civilians. With the arrival of Alliance reinforcements hours later, Mathias was among the survivors who fled.
Defeat at Torfan and Alliance custody[]
- “I was at the Blitz. I saw what the Terminus warlords wanted to do with Elysium. I had doubts at first, it was just some colony; an attack would've been a bloodbath. but I was swayed by promises of riches and "glory." An abundance of regret, more like. The whole thing was a sham excuse to incite senseless violence. The Alliance almost annihilated us, so we ran like dogs to hide and lick our wounds. There were talks about other raids, other attacks, but I was done. I was tired of hurting people.”
- —Mathias QuinnDespite being wracked with guilt about the violence he had inflicted on civilians, Mathias remained in the gang. Mathias was present among them two years later in 2178 CE, when the Alliance launched its retaliatory assault on Torfan. He didn't participate in the raid, having deserted from his crew just days prior.
He would be swept up in the massive Alliance anti-piracy raids in the region, being captured on the orders of captain Jack Powell of the SSV Singapore. Finally being forced to pay for his crimes against the Alliance, Mathias was sentenced to an Alliance detainment facility. He was later officially pardoned after cutting a deal with the Alliance Navy.
Systems Alliance[]
In exchange for years' worth of accumulated information on pirate and smuggler activity in scarcely patrolled or charted regions, Mathias was able to serve out the rest of his sentence in mandatory military service. He took the deal, preferring a semblance of freedom to languishing away in a prison cell. He was accepted into the Alliance military, going through boot camp and training.
